Rescue group tries to ban wiener canine races

A greyhound rescue in Idaho is trying to ban a wiener canine race put on by a regional Lions club.

This isn’t a joke.

The rescue group is taking things to a whole new level of crazy.

There are animals available who are really suffering, however this group is trying to ban a fun, household event.

From KBOI in Boise:

Greyhound Rescue of Idaho sent a “cease as well as desist” letter to the Boise hold Lions addressing its upcoming wiener canine racing fundraising event next month.

The group stated the event breaks a legislation dating back to 1996.

“The statute for canine racing is extremely particular as well as clear,” stated Virginia McKean, co-founder of Greyhound Rescue of Idaho. “…Any online canine races in the specify are illegal.”

KBOI 2News contacted the Boise hold Lions group for its response. nobody would go on camera, however the group sent a statement:

“Our event is a fun run for Dachshund household animals over a short distance, less than 50 feet. We believe the Idaho Racing Act does prohibit canine racing where the pari-mutuel system of wagering is used. There is no betting on dogs at our event.”

Full story here.

Here’s a photo from last year’s race, published on the event’s Facebook page. (The page appears to have been taken down now.)

The Boise hold Lions said in an AP short article that its races are for household animals as well as the distances are less than 50 feet. The very first location finisher wins $100.

Here’s a flier for the event:

I had a look at Greyhond Rescue of Idaho’s Facebook page as well as on it, the group posted, “We, GRI do not desire for anybody to get the concept that any type of canine racing is fun as well as harmless.”

Um …

I get that greyhound racing can be a awful thing, however come on. Wiener canine races?

Do we likewise requirement to ban canine agility?

My canine raced other dogs back in the day to get the fastest time on the agility course. Are they going to come after agility as well as flyball teams next? In flyball, dogs contend in relay races against each other.

Wiener canine races are fun, household events that generally raise money for a great cause.

For example, the “Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals” at the Los Alamitos race track in California raises money yearly for the seal beach animal care Center, a nonprofit that discovers houses for homeless animals in Orange County. Last year’s event increased much more than $15,000 for the center with tickets as well as tee shirts sales.

We much better ban that event too!

Here’s an example of one more wiener canine race from 2010 (link to video). The dogs race a whole 25 feet or so. ban the madness!

Can we please assist the dogs, such as numerous greyhounds, that are really suffering? (There are plenty.)

I believe the greyhound rescue group would be much better off educating people about actual greyhound racing than fretting about dachshunds having fun.

Hva tror du? Is this group a bit nuts or are they being reasonable?

Do you believe we ought to ban wiener canine races?
